Karel Appel (1921–2006) was born in Amsterdam to a Dutch family who wanted him to take over his father’s barbershop. But even as a child, Appel was independent and passionate about art. In 1942, he enrolled at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, set on becoming an artist.

While studying, Appel met other artists like Constant Nieuwenhuys and Corneille, who became close collaborators. On 16 July 1948, they joined Anton Rooskens, Theo Wolvecamp, and Jan Nieuwenhuys to start the Experimentele Groep in Holland. This group helped spark a wider international movement.

Later that year, on 8 November 1948, Appel helped found CoBrA, named after Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam, with artists like Asger Jorn and Constant Nieuwenhuys. CoBrA artists turned away from traditional art and instead focused on spontaneity, experimentation, and a childlike sense of freedom. Their art stands out for its bold colours, energy, and expressive shapes.

The CoBrA movement lasted only a few years, but it launched Appel’s international career. He later lived and worked in cities like Paris, New York, and Florence, where he developed his own style with energetic brushwork, thick paint, and a sculptural feel to his canvases.

Today, Karel Appel is seen as one of the key figures in post-war European art. His work has been shown around the world and is part of many major museum and private collections. People are still drawn to his art for its energy, freedom, and lively spirit.
