Pablo Picasso was born on 25 October 1881 in Málaga, Spain. His father, José Ruiz Blasco, was a painter, so Picasso naturally studied art in Barcelona and Madrid. Around the turn of the century, his illustrations appeared in Spanish magazines. He visited Paris for the first time, discovered the work of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and started signing his art with the name “Picasso.” His first solo exhibition received little attention, and after his close friend Carlos Casamaga died by suicide, Picasso created a series of sombre, blue-toned paintings known as his “Blue Period.” This is considered his first major creative phase. Over more than seventy years, Picasso produced a wide range of work, including paintings, sculptures, prints, ceramics, and stage designs.

Picasso quickly learned traditional art techniques when he was young, but later moved away from academic rules to try new ways of creating art. Early works like “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon” (1907) broke from tradition by using fragmented shapes and a new style that would define his Cubist period.

Picasso and Georges Braque started Cubism, which changed art by breaking objects into geometric shapes and putting them back together in new, abstract ways. After Cubism, Picasso kept experimenting and trying new styles, including Surrealism, Neo-Classicism, and abstraction. He created thousands of paintings, drawings, and sculptures, each showing his changing interests and style. He also made famous works like “Guernica” (1937), a strong anti-war painting about the Spanish Civil War.

Picasso’s influence reached far beyond his own studio. He worked with poets, playwrights, and musicians, and his creative approach inspired artists around the world. By mixing traditional and modern techniques and always seeking new ideas, Picasso built a legacy as a visionary artist whose impact is still felt today.
