Takashi Murakami, born in 1962 in Tokyo, is a leading figure in contemporary art. He is known for connecting traditional Japanese art with modern popular culture. His work brings together fine art and influences from anime, manga, and consumer culture, questioning the line between ‘high’ and ‘low’ art.

Murakami studied Nihonga painting at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, learning traditional Japanese techniques. Over time, he grew frustrated with the strict rules of the art world and started exploring Japanese subcultures like otaku, anime, and manga. In the early 1990s, he became known for sculptures that mixed careful craftsmanship with pop culture images.

In 1996, he started the Hiropon Factory, which later became Kaikai Kiki Co., Ltd. This studio and production company brings together art, business, and teamwork. A key part of his work is creating recurring characters like Mr. DOB and his famous smiling flowers. These playful images also let him explore bigger ideas about consumerism, fantasy, and unease.

Murakami created the ‘Superflat’ theory, which highlights the flat look found in Japanese art, from Edo-period prints to modern anime, and also points to the cultural ‘flatness’ in post-war Japan. In 2000, he organized the important Superflatexhibition, which brought together artists who share this style and idea, and introduced it to the global art scene.

Murakami has always worked in both fine art and commercial design. His ongoing partnership with Louis Vuitton is a key example of this mix. In 2025, they celebrated 20 years together with a large new collection of over 200 redesigned items, including handbags and accessories, all featuring his bold and colourful style.
